On our return from Thanksgiving weekend in VT, I took my final five days of vacation to visit some of the local spots in our area. Tammy and I spent Monday, November 26th and Tuesday the 27th visiting Historic Deerfield MA. Deerfield is the site of two "massacres". The first one during King Philips War and the other during the French and Indian War. The second "massacre" is what put Deerfield on the map but not much time is spent on this event. Historic Deerfield is all about visiting various homes that detail the way of life, furniture, and textiles of the Colonial Period to the 19th Century. We visited half the homes on Moday, spent the night at The Deerfield Inn, then finished up the other homes on Tuesday and headed home.
On Wednesday, November 28th, Tammy and I went to the New England Air Museum in Windsor Locks, CT. It has an area dedicated to the history of the 57th Fighter Group in WWII as well as exhibits detailing the Tuskegee Airmen, the history of balloon flight, and the history of the helicopter. There were quite a few military planes as well as commercial planes on display. Both of us were able to sit in the cockpit of a P-47. I was able to peer in to the bomb bay of a B-29.
Thursday the 29th, Tammy and I headed to Hartford to visit the CT Old State House for a visit and tour. We then walked over to the Wadsworth Athenuem, an art musuem, for a tour and visit. On Friday, Tammy went back to work, and I raked for the last time until spring.
We now await the return of the girls from Pensacola for Christmas break.

Two Puzzling Weekends
On Friday, November 9, Tammy and I left after work for a weekend visit to VT. We were there until Sunday after church. We also went to VT early Friday morning November 23 for Thanksgiving weekend to visit with everyone in VT as well as Rick and his family visiting from NY. We left VT early Monday morning for a full week of vacation which will be covered in a later blog.
What does one do when visiting family? Well for us there are the usual things of catching up on the latest news and lots of eating. On our second visit, we added a trip to the bowling alley for two games. Also on both of our last two visits, my mom broke out 1000 piece puzzles. The first one was started around 6pm on Saturday with Tammy, Justin, and myself finishing it around 2am Sunday --minus one missing piece which was found a week later in Justin's sweatshirt pocket. The second puzzle was begun Saturday afternoon and finished Sunday night around 11pm by my dad and myself with no missing pieces.
What is probably most puzzling about puzzles is the many hours spent putting them together just to take them apart again when finished.

Lancaster, PA
On Friday, November 2, Tammy and I left home at 4:30am and headed to Lancaster, PA for a weekend visit. After our five hour drive, we stopped at the Lancaster visitor information center to get our bearings and had some sticky buns for breakfast.
For our activities that first day, we visited the Amish House and Farm on Route 30. We then took their 90 minute Amish countryside tour.
Following the tour, we checked in to our room at A New Beginning Bed and Breakfast which we would highly recommend to anyone visiting the area. For the evening's activities, we had dinner at a local eatery called Katie's followed by attendance at the ever popular attraction Sight and Sound where we saw the production of Jonah.
On Saturday, we visited the Mennonite Information Center where we saw several movies concerning the Amish and Mennonites and toured a replica of the Old Testament tabernacle. We then scheduled an individual tour guide who drove with us through the countryside for two hours answering our barage of questions. It was then off to Dienner's (another local eatery) for dinner.
On Sunday, November 4, we packed up our bags and took the five hour drive home.

Block Island
On Thursday evening, September 20th, Tammy and I "set sail" for Block Island on the Point Judith ferry. It was a 55 minutes trip; and when we arrived at Old Harbor, we headed to our room at the Sheffield House.
Friday morning, we took an hour taxi tour of the island to get the lay of the island. Following that tour, we were dropped off at the South East Lighthouse for a tour. This is the lighthouse that was moved back from the eroding Mohegan Bluffs which we visited as well while there. We then walked a mile and some back to Old Harbor where we picked up two bikes and headed to Rodman's Hallow for an afternoon of hiking.
On Saturday, we had a tour of Abram's Animal Farm. After that we biked to New Harbor and had a two hour kayak tour of the Great Salt Pond. Sunday was a tour at the Historical Society and head home on the 1pm ferry.
Pictures with some descriptions are to the right.

From the Have's to the Have Not's
I am now pool-less.
Before our vacation to NC, the pool pump went. I also knew I needed to purchase a new pool cover for this winter. I was the only one really using the pool and was spending more time caring for it than in it. Still it was not an easy decision to get rid of the pool and had I known all the work in that decision I may have made it differently.
It has taken three full weekends to remove all vestiges of the pool. The first weekend was spent draining the water and then dismantling it ($5 cost to dispose of the scrap metal from the pool). The second weekend was spent filling the hole with 6 cubic yards of sand one wheelbarrow at a time ($63). The third weekend was filling the hole with 5 cubic yards of topsoil ($106).
The majority of the work is done as of this writing with the exception of the upper deck still needing to be taken down. My neighbor showed interest in taking it for use with his pool. If not, there will be the cost of a dumpster. We also would like to put in a stone paver patio where a portion of the pool had been. I have three requests in for quotes.
Will update as those decisions are made,

7YA + 7OA + 7D = ?
Since school has began, I thought I would start with a math question of 7YA + 7OA + 7D = ? . Anyone....Anyone.....Anyone. It equals 1 Great Vacation in NC.
For the week of August 25 through September 1 (making up the 7D in the formula above), we rented a house on Lake Nantahala in the mountians of NC. The we included Tammy and I, the VT Grandparents, the IL Grandparents, Tammy's brother (this makes up the 7 Older Adults), Jaclyln and Lizzy, two Beauchmin nephews, Lizzy's boyfriend, Jaclyn's college girlfriend Brookann and her brother Blake who is now dating Jaclyn (this makes up the 7 Younger Adults -- they did not like being called the kids).
We left early Thursday morning with a caravan of three cars. We took our car, the girls took a car to use at college, and the Beachmins brought their car for college. All went well until we hit a fourteen mile backup in VA that took us three hours to get through. During the time in traffic, I noticed the girls' brake lights were not working. When we got through the traffic, we pulled into a gas station to discover the car would not go into park. We called VT Grandfather who visiting my sister Robin and her husband Jeff in NC. They recommended to pull off the negative battery terminal cable to reset the car's computer. It worked. To make a long story shorter, we were able to get it to a dealership the next day in Asheville and have the brake switch replaced with 500 miles left on our warranty.
After that though, we had a great vacation. The weather was good. The house was very nice with four bedrooms and four and a half baths. The food and company was great. We swam, boated (motor boat, canoes, and kayaks), tubed, fished, played cards, did 2 jigsaw puzzles, and ate alot. Some of the "young adults" went golfing, hiking, and horse back riding.
After the week was over, the young adults headed off to PCC for the fall semester. Jaclyn, AJ, and Brookann beginning their senior year, Lizzy and Stas their sophmore year, and Jordan his freshman year.

Trapper Ron, M.A
About the end of May, Tammy awakens me around 3am saying she hears somethings on the roof. Sure enough, somethings running around up there. There's also this sound that we can't place, but it's loud. I go downstairs to the breezeway in time to see the figure of a raccoon jump from the garage roof to the deck railing and out in to the backyard's darkness.
The next morning's inspection shows the slats to our roof gable vents have been ripped open. I bend them back in to place. Now something has to be done to keep the raccoon off the roof. I go to Home Depot and purchase some carpet tack strips and nail them to the deck railing. I also nail some tack strips to some old doorway molding and place it at the corner of the house where I see raccoon tracks going up the vinyl siding.
Two weeks later, something on the roof again. This time I beat on the ceiling, and it leaves. Minor vent ripping this time. I survey the house, notice raccoon footprints up the other side corner of the house. I go to Home Depot, buy some more carpet tack strips, and use more old door molding.
Several days later, I'm weeding our flower bed and catch a glimpse of a raccoon scampering across my side yard into the neighbor's backyard. Later that same evening, I'm sitting on the back deck and what hops over the fence checking the ground for fallen seed from our bird feeders -- a raccoon. He starts approaching the deck leaving me in the quandry of staying there or getting up. I get up and he takes off back over the fence. An hour later, he comes to the fence, sees I'm still there, and leaves. Fast foward several days later, I'm sitting on the back deck, and he nonchalantly strolls by the fence not even giving me a glance.
Okay, enough already!! I'm losing sleep this whole time listening for a raccoon on my roof thinking ever noise I hear is his return. I have to get him.
I borrow two Havaheart traps from work. The first night , I set one up on the deck. Nothing. Second night. Nothing. Third night, I set the second one up near the other side of the house. Bingo, but it's not a raccoon. It's a juvenile possum. The fourth night, there's a baby skunk and another juvenile possum but still no raccoon. I retire the traps because I'm done dealing with every other animal but the one I want.
You can probably guess what runs across the street on my way to work that next morning a street up from my house. It's time to call in the professionals, and by this time next week, my roof gable vents will be pest proof at a cost of 50 dollars apiece.
I may not have gotten the raccoon to "rest in peace", but soon I will be able to -- nightly.

Back
After two months of dealing with the nagging thought of 'you have not posted anything for a while on CTGangwerGazette', I'm doing it.
The girls arrived home safely in May from their year at PCC . Jaclyn finished her junior year of nursing and made the dean's list. She is working for the summer at Baystate Hospital as a Collegiate Nursing Tech. She will be working three twelve hour shifts a week. Lizzy finished her freshman year with a 3.06 grade point average and is back working at Once Upon a Child four days a week.
Tammy and I have been sprucing up our outdoors with plants. For Valentines Day, I purchased the plants for two butterfly and hummingbird gardens which we placed in the raised bed we had used in the past for vegetables. We also added a number of bleeding heart (4) and Jacob's ladder (5) plants to the area along the back fence. By the deck, we planted some sweet pea vines (3) and a clematis. In the front we replaced some coneflowers (2) that did not regrow and added some morning glories (4) to the side fence. For vegetables this year, we just planted some grape tomatoes (4) in containers on the back deck.
Now that I have made a recent posting, I can float in the pool to my heart's content knowing I have bought myself some time until the thoughts of 'you have not posted anything for a while on CTGangwerGazette' returns.

Gettysburg
The weekend of March 16th through the 18th, Tammy and I traveled to Gettysburg,PA. We left after work on Thursday and drove the six hours to our motel just outside the town.
On Friday, we went to the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center where we purchased our tickets to the movie A New Birth of Freedom, the Gettysburg Cyclorama, and the Gettysburg Museum of the Civil War. We were able to make the 9am movie and cyclorama which took 45 minutes. We were the only two in the theater for both of these. We then headed to the will call window to let our battlefield guide know that we were there for our 10am tour of the Gettysburg National Military Park. Tammy and I were guided around Gettysburg for the next three hours learning the history of the three day battle in our own vehicle. After the tour, we spent the next three and a half hours going through the museum.
On Saturday, we visited the town of Gettysburg. We stopped at the town's visitor center and picked up a self-guided tour brochure of sites to see in town. As we progressed up and down the streets of the tour of the town, we would also stop and visit the various shops and stores that interested us. After six hours in town, we returned to our motel to soak in the hot tub and pool.
Tammy and I left Gettysburg on Sunday for the trip home. We had planned on watching our copy of the movie Gettysburg when we got home; however, we could not find it. So instead, we read the books that we had purchased Gettysburg - Hour by Hour and At Gettysburg (Or What a Girl Saw and Heard of the Battle).

Reading Is Fun-damental
Every so often I get on a reading kick.
Recently I have been on that kick since Jaclyn bought me a book for Christmas. Below is the list of books I have read since then:
The Worst Hard Time (The 1930's dust bowl)
April 1865 - The Month that Saved America
The Gangs of New York
The King's Best Highway
Uncle Tom's Cabin
The Johnstown Flood
Nothing Like it in the World-The Men who built the Transcontinental Railroad
Sea of Glory - America's Voyage of Discovery - the US Exloring Expedition
Why spend time reading? Well, a book opens up a whole new world. It's fun and expands our horizons because with a book we hold the whole world in our hands -- at least according to the 1973 R.I.F Public Service Announcement.

Fun in Philly
On Friday, February 17th, Tammy and I traveled to Philadelphia, PA to visit the city. Upon arrival, we toured Independence Hall. We then took the two hour Tour by Foot of the following historic sites: the President's House, Declaration House, Signer's Walk of Fame, the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, Carpenter's Hall, Second Bank of the United States - now a portrait gallery, First Bank of United States, Christ Church, Elfreth's Alley, Betsy Ross' House, Benjamin Franklin's Home Site, the Quaker Meeting House, and Benjamin Franklin's Grave. After the tour, Tammy and I then went back and revisited in greater detail the places in bold and had dinner (a lebanon bologna sandwich for me) at Reading Terminal.
The next day, Saturday, February 18th, we took the 90 minute Big Bus Company tour of Philadelphia because of our sore feet. On this tour, we drove by many of the above historic places plus further north and east seeing more of the modern sites of Philadelphia. After going around the tour once, we got off at Rittenhouse Square and did some shopping and architecture viewing. We then went to the Bourse House for dinner and each had a Philly Cheesesteak.
Sunday, February 19, we headed home. Some pictures of our trip are to the right.

An MP3/GPS?
The mantra of the day seems to be to device integration; however, below are some reasons the above two devices may not always make a good fit.
How many times have you really wanted anyone to tell you how to get to Sesame Street?
If (like most GPS's) it has trouble finding normal streets on occassion, how will it ever find a place Where the Streets have No Name or for that matter a Road to Nowhere?
Do you really want to waste time on a trip going down some Long and Winding Road?
Who doesn't already know where Route 66 is -- for doesn't everyone get their kicks there?
Isn't driving intolerable enough without being taken on a Highway to Hell or the Highway to the Danger Zone?
Don't we have enough heartache in everyday life without having to experience the Boulevard of Broken Dreams?
However, there is one instance where it might make good sense -- for who wouldn't want to find Easy Steet.

What's Up?
Jaclyn and Lizzy made it back to PCC for the spring semester. They left with their cousin AJ and Lizzy's boyfriend Stas last Friday, Janaury 21. They stopped at Aunt Robin's in SC that night and then left Saturday arriving in FL early that evening. Monday they all signed up for their classes which began on Tuesday. They will be down there until the middle of May.
This weekend, January 27 and 28, Tammy and I spent Friday and Saturday in Hartford. We purchased a special hotel package that included two tickets to a comedy club, the Mark Twain house, and the Harriet Beecher Stowe house. The package was called Hysterical, Historical Hartford.
I am looking forward to the Pats getting revenge this coming weekend on the Giants for the 2007 Superbowl.

News You Can Use
The girls arrived safely home from PCC on Saturday, December 17th after their 22 hour road trip with Stas and cousin AJ. They have been visiting with friends and working at Once Upon a Child this Christmas break. They both made the Dean's List. Lizzy is one for one, and Jaclyn continues her streak of making it every semester. They will be heading back to PCC the middle of this month.
For Christmas we celebrated at home as a family. We went to VT for the New Year's holiday weekend to visit with VT grandparents, the B's, and the NY Gangwers.
After the October Nor'easter that dumped 21 inches of snow and caused so much tree damage, our winter weather has been quiet - no snow and temperatures above normal. Here's hoping it stays that way. Shoveled enough snow last winter to last several winters.
