Christmas is ...........

Okay, either everyone is angry about Rachelle winning the Thanksgiving puzzle prize, or everyone is angry concerning the comments made about them as I have heard nothing from anyone. Either way, everyone is going to be a winner this time and get the opportunity to participate in this week's "Christmas is ......" blog. Now once you have all calmed down , please read the directions on how this is going to work.

We are going to do something that will make mom beam with pride. We are going to do an acrostic of what Christmas is to us. I will be e-mailing each of the Gangwer's a letter that they are to use in the acrostic. A one or two sentence description of why you used that word is also requested. Once you e-mail me back, I will add it to the acrostic below. (See the one I did.) If there are any lurkers out there who would like to participate in the last two letter (A & S) of the word Christmas, please e-mail me at tg028@netzero.net with your word.

I know everyone is busy at Christmas trying to get my present, but a moment of your time to share with others the true meaning of Christmas will not put you that far behind. Also, failure to participate will cause "Christmas" to be incomplete, and all will know why as I have listed your name next to your assigned letter. I will even go so far as to make the concession that if doing this special Christmas blog ends up taking too much of your time, you can skip getting my present this year. Your participation will be present enough to me.

CHRIST - Christ for which there would be no Christmas.
HOME - Home for where family should be at Christmas.
ROYALTY - The King of kings became a baby that we might reign with Him someday.
I
NCENSE - Gifts brought to the Christ Child by the Magi.
S
AVIOR - We celebrate His birth. (Also "S" for stocking because of the year mom and dad didn't put Rachelle's stocking out until morning because she couldn't fall asleep)
TIME - Time spent with family.
MARY - Without her Jesus would not have been born. (Rick also submitted "M" for me because that is what Christmas is all about.)

And the Winner Is...........

As promised in the Thanksgiving puzzle blog, the winner would be rewarded with a blog of their very own; and that blog has finally arrived. Now, if your a fan of any of the recent prime time reality shows that announce winners/losers, you have no doubt noticed they like to drag out that announcement. The announcer says something like "And this week's winner/loser is.........." then the camera pans to each of the contestants focusing on them for several seconds then back to the announcer then back to the contestants. This goes on for what seems like an eternity --- supposedly building what they think is suspense, but to me it is just irritating. Some shows even go so far as to cut to a commercial break and then redo the whole announcement and camera thing over again. Aaaaarrrrrggggghhhhhh!

So with that said and no further ado, the winner of this year's Thanksgiving puzzle should be very obvious if you are familiar with the Gangwers at all. It pretty much played out as did the many games we competed in as children. Mom didn't play because she probably didn't know how to (or so she always said). Robin most likely was reading a book or taking a bath instead of playing. Randi probably began the puzzle but then quit half way through. Rachelle stuck it out to the very end and found all 25 of the hidden words. Rachelle likes to play word games as all who know her are aware. In fact when she visits you, she will spend half her day on the laptop playing online word games. Apparently all that online training paid off for her as Rachelle is the Winner of the First Ever CTGangwerGazette Thanksgiving Puzzle. I must also write that Rick gets an Honorable Mention for finding almost all the words but one -- health. Unfortunately, no one remembers who came in second though do they. Better luck next year, Rick.

A "Commercial" Thanksgiving Holiday

Well, the Thanksgiving holiday is winding to a close. The Beauchmein's "zoom, zoom"-ed (or at least as fast as Alan 'zoom, zooms' anyway) down to our house for a several day visit. We "left the porch light on" for them knowing they 'abslolutely, postivitely had to be here' Wednesday night.

On my way home from work Thursday, I was looking forward to the "M'm!, M'm! Good!" turkey dinner and was "ready for some football". However upon arriving home, 'I had questions, and Tammy had answers' as to how the drain became clogged. After a half hour or so of liquid drano and some good old fashioned plunging then 'away went troubles down the drain'.

Five o'clock came around and 'once the turkey popped, the fun did not stop'. It was time for its carving, so I asked Alan 'if he could do it and I would help'. He did a fine job as the turkey "was in good hands." The table was set with all the best because 'we are worth it'; and there were "no ifs, ands, or butts" about it, the dinner was "finger licking good" "to the last drop".

I can honestly 'raise my hand because I'm sure' that "I am loving it" and looking forward to 'just doing it' all over again next year (minus the clogged sink). "Oh what a feeling."

P.S. Apparently, only the Beauchmein's like me enough to participate in my "Thanksgiving games" as they are the only one's to let me know how many words they found in the previous post.

A Thanksgiving Puzzle

Let me be one of the first to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving. If you get bored of watching parades and football games or tired from Black Friday shopping, I have created a word search for you to relax with. In the word search, there are a number of things that we all should be thankful for. They can be found up, down, backwards, and diagonal.

For best results, you will need to highlight the puzzle and then copy it to notepad so the letters line up correctly. (Notepad is under Start --All Programs--Accessories. Don't use wordpad.) I tried for quite some time to get the blog letters to line up, but they wouldn't.

Please post to the comment section how many words you find. The winner will receive a special CTGangwerGazette post of their very own. Have fun and no cheating.

Gangwer's Island

Just sit right back and you'll read a tale,
A tale of a normal day
That starts at the break of dawn
After I awake.

The alarm sounds off at 4am.
To the shower I must drift
For I am heading off to work
For an eight hour shift, an eight hour shift.

The day is like any day,
The news and weather read,
Songs and programs get played
With verses being said, verses being said.

The clock says it 2pm so off to home I head
To see Licorice,
my wife Tammy too,
The newspaper and the mail,
My two daughters
Jackie and Elizabeth
here at home sweet home.

(If you haven't figured it out yet, the above must be sung to the tune of Gilligan's Island for the full effect to be enjoyed. Perhaps (no promises), the second verse will be blogged at a later time.)

Beware Falling Leaves or Not

Well, Fall is about half over, and most of the leaves have changed from their summer outfit of green to their fall coat of many colors with many trees having shed that coat for winter nakedness. While that is true for most of the trees here in CT, I have the fortunate pleasure of having oak trees. My oak trees like to hang on to their leaves as if to laughingly say to Fall, "We are not going to bare it all for you!" They like to hang on to their leaves for as long as possible which they then just turn a yucky brown color as if to give Fall a taunt of 'No pretty Fall colors from us -- Na-Na-Na-Na-Na". It usually isn't until around Thanksgiving that the oak trees have to cry "Uncle", and Fall wins out. One would think the oaks would know by now that they never win. Silly oaks!!

So why am I telling you this, and what does it all mean? The short answer is so you'll feel sorry for me as I have to keep my fingers crossed that we don't have an early blanket of white before I get the opportunity to go outside in the cold November winds to rake up all my fallen leaves. (Okay, let's hear it ----- Ohhhh, poor Ron.) The long answer would be, well, too long so I will not tire you with it now. ( I will keep it as a possible blog entry for the future in case I happen to run out of blogging ideas.)

On a positive note concerning Fall chores (because after all - we are to accentuate the positive - eliminate the negative), I was able to clean out the garage last weekend (which you know if you have read my last blog). That means the cars can be put to bed inside - away from the overnight frost - and not be awakened prematurely in the morning to be defrosted.

Happy Fall, and God bless us everyone!

The Farmer in the Dell

The mouse takes the cheese. The mouse takes the cheese. Hi-ho, the-derry-o. The mouse takes the cheese. (Yep, you know you were singing along, and now won't be able to get the tune out of your head. You're welcome.)

Actually, the mouse (or it could be mice) have taken a lot more than the cheese. For those of us who live in the colder climates, fall means field mice don't want to stay in the fields. They want to winter in the warmth of a garage or home. (Seeing as to how the mice can't be like what we Northerners call "snowbirds" who head south every winter, the mice have to make do with what they have and apparently a garage/home will do.)

I prefer the mice stay in their natural habitats and have therefore been on a weeks-long mission to catch the mouse/mice who have decided to winter in my garage. Tammy purchased for me four old fashioned mouse traps. I set three of them up with a nice morsel of cheese pressed onto the spring mechanism. I then snuggled in to bed with visions of "captured" mice dancing in my head. In the morning, I sprang to me feet and flew to the garage and what to my wondering eyes should appear but no mice --- and no cheese. Okay, if at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Apparently, I didn't put the cheese on well enough. So this time I smear the cheese in to the crevices of the spring mechanism. Wake up on day two. No mice -- no cheese. Day three, decided to try something a little different. Peanut butter. It's sticky and won't come off the spring mechanism so easily. Wake up. Not a lick of peanut butter left, nor a mouse to be found. Okay, how about some bread pressed into the crevices of the spring mechanism. Nope, they got that too.

To move things along, I will just list for you the smorgasbord I have shared with my garage mice -- pepperoni, apples, sunflower seeds, and mint dental floss (figured they might need to use some after all they had eaten). In all my endeavors, I have caught only two mice (No, Randi, I will not be posting pictures of them. So don't bother asking), but I know there must be more of them as the food keeps disappearing off the traps.

While cleaning the garage on Saturday, I found some old "sonic" pest noisemakers that are supposed to keep mice away. As a last resort (and the fact that I need to go grocery shopping), I plugged them in and am hoping the unbearable noise will make them leave my garage and begin their trek south for the winter allowing the cheese to stand alone. The good Lord knows I have provided them with enough nutrients to make the trip.

Apple Picking 2008

Well, you need not wait any longer. They are here. The much anticipated photos of our annual Columbus Day tradition. If you want to see them without comment, then just allow them to fade in and out for your viewing pleasure. If you would like some commentary on what you are seeing, then click on the photo and go to the Picasa site for some Ron Gangwerian comments.

It's Official

Well, golden boy is no more. (Please no sympathy cards. I am having a hard enough time dealing with it.) The pool is officially closed as I just moments ago put the cover over it. Now begins the long, dreary, and dark winter months where we hold up in the house shivering because the cost of fuel oil is so much we keep the thermostat at around 64. (Just a heads up Rick -- we might be visiting you a lot so we can thaw out seeing as how you use wood.)

I would also like to make a disclaimer less sometime in the future a video pops up of me cutting my grass after I had blogged that I had cut it for the last time earlier. We have had a pretty wet summer and fall (17 inches of rain above normal so far) so the grass just keeps growing and growing. I will only comment at this point that I hope that I have cut my the grass for the last time.

Sometime this week we are going to go on our only real family tradition that we have kept year after year -- our annual family apple picking trip. We will pick several bags of various kinds of apples; come home and peel, core, and slice them; then make about 8 apple pies (we give away 6 of them usually to neighbors and friends -- if you don't get one then you know why now don't you), two apple crisps (given to Jaclyn's and Lizzy's teachers as a bribe for good grades and report card comments), and freeze the rest for use at Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Blog you later.

Ghost Writer

This week, Lizzy is taking responsibility for the blog. The opinions expressed are solely her's and not those of the other ctgangwers.

Well, I am writing this blog today because my dad is obviously too lazy to make one. Nothing of importance really happened this week as our homestead remains quite ordinary with no politically involved children, unless you want to count my government class as such. It has been a slow week, the highlight would most likely be last night(Friday the 3rd) as Jackie was at a concert & I was out at the mall with some friends.Tonight I believe my dad is making an appearance at his WIHS banquet without us because Jaclyn and I would rather not go. They, in my opinion, have food that is quite unappetizing, the music is droll, the speakers are usually quite good, but their messages are above my knowledge level. Those are about all the reasons we do not enjoy the event, besides the fact the hours seem to drone on. Well back to the actual blogging, I don't have a lot to say about anyone else because no one really talks to me that much so I guess that's about all I can come up with.

All Along the East Coast

Well, seems I may have underestimated my popularity in the last post :) I am read up and down the East Coast (Thanks Kim in sunny FL and Robin in the Carolinas). Now if I could just start breaking through into the western states. Hmmm...will have to think if I have any old friends (Yes, I did have friends at one time. Not sure what happened along the way) or maybe even pay someone to be my friend so I can say my blog is read coast to coast.

Anyways, Fall has arrived. I believe this was the last week to do any floating in the pool. I will probably be closing it this week. May also have been the last time to cut the grass which to some people is a chore but to me is a "labor of love". Tammy's mom arrives today from IL for several days. Jaclyn is keeping busy with SAT preparation, school club (Hey, Randi, your not the only one with politically minded children as she is president of the Daniel Club), and church events. Lizzy is doing what Lizzy does best which is lolly gagging as she does her work (school, chores, etc.) so everything takes much longer than it should (No she is not president, vice president, or even a member of anything but then neither is Lauren -- or is she, and Rick just hasn't said anything?!)

Well, that does it for this week's post. (Felt some pressure from Randi's comment to do it earlier but then thought to let her know "good things come to those who wait" so "patience my young grasshopper"). If there are any lurkers out there that read this, please let me know. Could save myself some money especially if you live out west.

Someone Is Interested!

Well, I hadn't updated the blog in awhile because I thought everyone was too busy playing with their Facebook accounts and were not interested in the oh so boring blogasphere anymore. Apparently, at least one person does check back occasionally. (Randi must be too busy hob-nobbing with local politicians and running Madison's new political campaigns. As for the rest of the family, I don't think they even bother stopping by for a visit.)

Tammy and the girls returned from three days of school camp. I got to enjoy the bachelor's life for several days. Coming home and eating a package of cookies for dinner. Floating in the pool to keep up my golden boy image. (Not many days left to do that as the water is turning mighty cold.) Watching what I wanted on the TV.

But as the saying goes all good things must come to an end. So here I sit at the school library at 8pm (which actually is pretty nice because I can use their dictionary to check the spelling of several words) while Tammy photocopies school papers and prepares for her field trip to the ocean Monday; and we both wait for Lizzy to get done with a friend's birthday party at 1030pm.

Hey, thanks for caring and reading this far.

Another Week Has Come and Gone

Well, another week has come and gone. So it is time for a third blog post.

This week I started doing the entire 9am to 2pm air shift by myself as the person training me left for his new job. If you ever get bored and have nothing else to do, you can tune in to WIHS on the internet at wihsradio.org.

The girls are all getting over a cold (sounds a little like Randi's blog except the girls didn't go to the hospital). Tammy is busy with teaching her biology class using BJU material and working at the hospital. Lizzy is busy with school work and projects. Jaclyn is taking some tough courses but has two study halls so gets most of her work done at school. She may be going to Hawaii in April with some friends. All the girls will be gone for a couple of days next week for school camp.

By Request

Apparently, a request has been made by my little brother to discuss him in my blog. (See comments made under earlier blog.) Now, I do realize it has not been a full week since I last posted, but I did not want to disappoint him.

To be honest, I don't know if I can recall how great he is, etc.as his comments requested; but here are some of the things I do recall.

1)When he was about three, he had a fascination with the Incredible Hulk. He would go around the house roaring like the Incredible Hulk and then attack us as we sat and watched television. For Christmas that year, he had to have a Stretch Armstong doll like the Incredible Hulk. (I won't even discuss the Hulk underoos.)
2) Then there was the time when he was around five. Our front door bell rang, and there he was with a toy tool belt on and a briefcase. He said he was going around the neighborhood selling drugs and did we want to buy any. (Hmmmmmm.......)
3)His main source of sustenance was Rice Crispies, and thus that was pretty much the only cereal we had in the house. (Probably the reason why to this day I won't eat Rice Crispies)
4)We shared a bedroom until he was about seven or so. I then moved my bedroom downstairs and pretty much lost contact with everyone in the family after that. I was pretty much only seen at dinner time. Hence the end of my recollections of my little brother.

Well, I hope that makes you happy little brother. Maybe next week I will publish some recollections of my sisters. (Any requests?)

Mundacity

Okay, Randi is complaining about no new posts.

I was planning on posting about once a week because the older one gets the more mundane life gets. Don't believe me. Well here you go. I wake up at 4:30am to go to work and find myself falling asleep around 9pm. The rest of the family gets up around 6am and heads off to school. They get home around 4pm. We eat dinner, do the dishes, and the girls do their homework. That's pretty much what our life consists of presently. (I guess it could be worse. We could be Licorice who sleeps all night in Jaclyn's bedroom then sleeps in our bedroom all day while we are gone. She is up long enough to eat and drink and be teased by Lizzy and myself.)

Stay tuned next week for specifics on the above "mundacity". (Unless Randi complains again and makes me post sooner than that.)

Taking the Plunge

Finally took the plunge in to blogging. Thought if Randi could do one, hey, why not us.

For our first post, a little update on what everyone is up to here in CT. The girls and Tammy start school this Monday, August 25th. Lizzy pretty much spent her summer sitting at the laptop viewing all her friends' and cousins' You Tube videos and social networking accounts as well as listening to music. Jaclyn spent the summer working at school as well as driving herself to friends' homes and social activities. Tammy worked weekends at the hospital and has been recently preparing to teach Biology for the new school year. I recently went from working the overnights to working days at the radio station. Starting September 7th, my on-air shift will be from 9am to 1:30pm.
